The University of Barcelona (in Catalan and officially Universitat de Barcelona) (UB) is a public educational institution based in Barcelona, Spain. Its powers are distributed between several campuses around the city and its surroundings: the campus of University Square, Diagonal, Bellvitge (Hospitalet de Llobregat) Torribera in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Mundet, Sants and the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona.
History:
UB's origins date back to the era of Martin I, the human, which wanted to give Barcelona the study of medicine. Faced with this situation, the organization of the Council cent refused.
In times of Alfonso, the magnanimous UB opened in 1450 by a bull previously granted by the Pope. Three centuries later, in the eighteenth century, the seat was transferred to Cervera (Lleida) in gratitude for the villagers to support Felipe de Anjou during the War of Spanish Succession.
In 1842 he returned to Barcelona headquarters occupies a former palace on the Calle del Carme and later a new building built by Elies Eixample Rogent. 90 years later, the government of the Second Republic gave the UB own autonomy, renamed University of Barcelona (not to be confused with the current UAB). But with the arrival of the Franco dictatorship, autonomy was revoked in 1939, entering an era of decay, much of the teachers were replaced by teachers according to the new regime that ended with a period of intellectual crisis.
The UB was the only university in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands existed until 1968, when it began a process that lasted until the 90's that caused the other Catalan universities and the University of the Balearic Islands. In parallel, the UB itself initiated an expansion project, creating different schools throughout the territory of Barcelona: Pedralbes campus, Sants and Mundet Bellvitge.
