The Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, also known by its acronym MACBA is basically dedicated to the exhibition of works made during the second half of the twentieth century. Located in the neighborhood of El Raval in Barcelona (Spain), close to the Centre of Contemporary Culture.
The idea of establishing a museum in the city of these features is due to the writer and art critic Cirici-Pellicer, who, in 1959, began to gather a collection of works. Cirici enlisted the help of other art lovers who contributed to the expansion of the collection. Made several exhibitions of works by artists of the time. The exhibition Art and Peace, held in 1963 and Franco had a clear content, marked the end of the idea of Cirici. The collection so far collected is deposited in the Museum Victor Balaguer.
The collection includes world reference names as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Marcel Duchamp, Joaquín Torres-García, Pablo Palencia, Antoni Tapies, Dau of September, Miquel Barceló and Roy Lichtenstein alongside works by famous artists, or unknown authors today, but who in the future can become great figures in the arts.
The idea was not recovered until 1985. Created a consortium which included the City of Barcelona and the Generalitat of Catalonia and it was decided to locate the new museum in the old House of Charity. The idea was again held back until 1986, then-mayor of Barcelona, Pasqual Maragall, commissioned the construction of a new building that was headquarters of the future museum. In 1987 she formed the Contemporary Art Museum Foundation, a private, who joined the consortium formed by the two governments. The MACBA opened its doors on November 28, 1995.
The building which housed the museum would be commissioned American architect Richard Meier. The building, designed by Meier aims to unite contemporary art exhibited inside the historical forms of the surrounding buildings. The entrance to the MACBA lobby gives access to a cylindrical shape from which you access by means of ramps to the various galleries where exhibitions are held. The use of white, complemented by the use of glass skylights and reflective materials, the building does have a special brightness.
It is also known as a famous spot to skateboard.
