The twentieth century began with the same political upheaval that ended the previous century, which crystallize in the Civil War. The Franco dictatorship meant a period of some decline in the evolution of the city, but the subsequent arrival of democracy and the reinstatement of the inherent rights of the Catalans Barcelona relaunched the traditional vitality. The continued progress both economically and socially led the city to be a city of great importance in both Spanish and European context, while various social events such as the 1992 Olympic Games and the Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona have put a metropolis of international standing.
