CosmoCaixa is the name adopted known as the Science Museum in Barcelona, after its recent refurbishment by La Caixa in 2004.
The building was designed by Josep Domčnech i Estapŕ (1904-1909) in order to accommodate a blind asylum, which lasted until 1979-1980, when it was remodeled and expanded by Jordi Garcés and Enric Sňria to house the Museum of Science Fundació "La Caixa". Further reform in order to make it the current CosmoCaixa opened on September 25, 2004, after five years of work. Such reform and expansion of the Museum were made by Terradas Architects.
During the remodeling process, were retained and restored the walls of the old building modernist, which lasted into the body of the new lobby, brick. The subsequent reform has significantly expanded the old facilities with new prominence of the glass and steel, with more than 50,000 square meters, occupying four times the former Science Museum. The new space includes nine plants, six underground but with natural light and a large public plaza overlooking the city.
The museum is divided into several areas:
-The geological wall, showing various geological structures.
-The flooded forest, which plays an Amazonian forest
-The living area, with various experiments on the evolution of matter.
-The planetarium.
-Rooms designed for children as the global bubble room "click and flash" or Board "play and play!"
